Hampden: Great location, great people
Hampden was originally known as Wheelersborough, after its first European settler, Benjamin Wheeler. On February 24, 1794, the town was officially incorporated and renamed in honor of the English patriot John Hampden.
Today, Hampden’s location near Bangor, along with its outstanding schools and its ranking as the second-safest town in Maine, make it a very desirable place to live. However, the town has kept its rural feel, with parks along the Penobscot River and a refreshing absence of national chain stores.
Notable natives and residents of Hampden include:
- Hannibal Hamlin, the 15th vice president of the United States, who served as the first-ever Republican vice president from 1861 until he was replaced by Andrew Johnson as the vice-presidential nominee in the 1864 election. He also served as a U.S. Senator and Congressman, as well as the U.S. Minister to Spain. Two of his sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
- Sally Hamlin, Vice President Hamlin’s great-granddaughter, a child actress who made dozens of spoken-word records for children in the early 20th century
- Dorothea Dix, a 19th-century advocate for the poor, the mentally ill, the disabled and prisoners
- Carolyn Hopkins, a public-service announcer whose voice is heard in transportation systems including the Paris Métro, Charles de Gaulle Airport, Incheon International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, JFK International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Grand Central Terminal, the Staten Island Ferry and the New York City subway system
Dependable fuel and equipment service, delivered with the personal care of a local, family owned business.
